The Ark Animal Centre Puppy Shelter is Moving!

SOLD Ark New Property Cedar road, Fourways copy

Ark Animal Centre, the Fourways-based puppy rescue shelter is moving to new premises after securing a large property better suited to the activities of the centre.

Tracy Otto and her two daughters, Candice and Cara, started Ark in 2011. It is the fastest growing puppy rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing shelter with a passion for animals that has been nurtured over many years. That passion has outgrown the current premises, so a plan was put in place to expand and develop the centre. This plan required a new beginning on new premises.

The process began quietly in the background since early last year. While the shelter continued to operate as normal, the new property was identified and plans were put into place to purchase it for the relocation of the centre.

The new property consists of 23 acres in a park like setting on the Millgate farm not even 10 minutes from Fourways. This was a huge undertaking that was finalised on the 1st of February 2013.

The money required was impossible to generate from the charitable activities and fundraising Ark has been involved in, as these funds are used for the welfare and operation of the centre.

So without much delay, Tracy spoke to her husband Alan, and they decided to put their house on the market in order to raise the funds needed to purchase the new property.

“If all goes according to plan, the shelter will be moving in mid-April however, it is going to need a lot of work beforehand,” explains Tracy. “There is a lot of behind the scenes work to be done for the shelter to be ready for us to move the animals in our care to the new facility.”

Ark’s long-term goal is to provide a centre that is self-sustainable. So it can continue to grow and provide a place for all animal lovers to become stakeholders in providing much needed help and care for puppies until they find a new home. To achieve this, any help in the areas listed below will be gratefully appreciated!

Ark’s aim is to provide the most enjoyable experience for visitors and animals alike by changing the perception of welfare. By raising the bar for your welfare experience, and looks forward to providing this for the surrounding areas.

Tracy and her family are calling on the community to get involved and become a part of the greater ‘Ark family.’  She explains: “Our ultimate goal is to build an animal shelter and homing facility of which Fourways can be very proud, by giving a second chance to the hundreds of innocent animals we look after.”

Toby & Master a Township Love Story

toby and master township love story blog cover copy

You often hear of the horrible animal stories from the townships of South Africa, but you very rarely hear of a good story…well this is one of those. A story that gives hope and shines light on some special people living in Johannesburg’s informal settlements…

Wendy McWilliams, one of our fantastic volunteers had told us about Toby and his amazing dog. She brought Toby and Master to visit us on Sunday – and were we in for a treat.

Toby is the most amazing person, he is a security guard at a complex, lives in a shack in Kya Sands Informal Settlement and is an avid animal lover. His dog Master who he has had since he was a puppy and is now 5 years old, he has trained himself – with no formal training whatsoever.

This is how our meeting went. Toby arrived, I asked him if he needed his dog vaccinated – No, he is fully vacced, sterilised, de-wormed and rabied. Oh! So would you like help with basic training – No, Master is well versed in training, here is a demonstration.

Well after the basic sit, paw, down, we then moved onto tricks, fetch, stay, etc. For the first time that day I was in awe, I thought we could teach Toby, but no Toby has a lot to teach us. We then entered the shelter, I was a bit concerned, firstly with an adult dog entering into a pack of dogs who had been watching the goings on behind the gate and secondly with a few of the dogs being a bit racist.

toby and master township love story 001

Well! Toby and Master walked in quite casually and were greeted by all our dogs with absolute glee. Master was so well socialised and got on phenomenally with dogs and small puppies alike. Dolly who is racist went up to Toby and asked for love – all our mouths dropped open – this has never happened before. Toby has a way with dogs very rarely seen. He is absolutely gentle with them and they respond incredibly.

So why was Toby there? He would like to learn Tracking with Master and would also like to find out where he could do a formal course in Dog Training.

toby and master township love story 002

What we would like to do for Toby – Find a Tracking group in the Kya Sands vicinity, organise a course in Training and mostly if we could find a job for Toby working in the animal field, as we feel his talents are absolutely wasted in the field he is currently in.

If we could we would hire Toby in a second, but we can’t, so if anyone is looking for a fantastic employee please consider Toby, you will not be disappointed. If you would like to contact Toby, please let us know at info@arkanimalcentre.co.za and we will put you in touch with him.

Until next time,

Tracy Otto, Ark Animal Centre Manager.
